Don’t Be That Cyclist — Staying Safe as the Days Get Shorter

Don’t Be That Cyclist — Staying Safe as the Days Get Shorter

Ah, fall. That magical time of year when the leaves turn, the air gets crisp, and suddenly it’s dark at 5:30 PM and you realize your last ride of the day might end with you blending in perfectly with a pile of fallen leaves. Romantic? Sure. Safe? Not so much.

At Speakeasy Bikes, we love nothing more than squeezing in one more road ride before dinner, but the changing seasons come with some very real safety challenges. Here are a few tips (sprinkled with a little common sense and maybe a chuckle or two) to help keep you rubber side down:

1. Light It Up Like a Rolling Christmas Tree

Daylight is a luxury in the fall and winter. Front lights, rear lights, and even helmet-mounted lights aren’t overkill—they’re survival gear. Don’t just be seen; be unmistakable. If you look like a UFO on two wheels, you’re doing it right.

2. Dress Like a Highlighter

That black jersey looked sleek in July. In October? It’s basically camouflage. Go neon, go reflective, go full traffic-cone chic. You’ll thank yourself when a driver spots you 100 yards sooner.

3. Know Your Route (and Your Exit Strategy)

That back road shortcut you love? It’s pitch black at 6:00 PM, and raccoons run it now. Stick to lit routes or make peace with nocturnal wildlife encounters.

4. Beware of Seasonal Hazards

Fallen leaves look beautiful until they turn into slippery booby traps. Add in wet roads, early frost, and the occasional pumpkin debris (yes, it happens), and suddenly your cornering needs to be extra cautious.

5. Tell Someone Where You’re Going

A quick text before rolling out: “Headed on the usual loop, back in an hour.” That way, if you do get into trouble, someone knows to send out the search party (and hopefully bring snacks).

At Speakeasy Bikes, we want our riders safe, smiling, and telling tales about epic rides—not ER visits. Swing by the shop and we’ll get you set up with the lights, reflective gear, and maybe even a neon vest that makes you look like a crossing guard superhero.

Stay safe out there, and remember: shorter days just mean longer stories when you roll back in.
